Well, Among Us is definitely the Fall Guys of September, that’s for sure. The game came out of nowhere to be one of the highest profile games of the year, drawing millions of Twitch viewers with practically every major streamer getting deep into it, and it’s had hundreds of thousands of concurrent players on Steam.
Like most small games that blow up unexpectedly, the developer, InnerSloth, was not exactly ready for this kind of sprawling success. And that has altered their future plans dramatically.
The biggest news is that there was supposed to be an Among Us 2, but that has now been cancelled, and everything that was going to be made for that game will now be poured into Among Us 1 to bolster its current prospects and keep it relevant in the future.
The problem is a technical one, that they really wanted to build an Among Us 2 to fix the outdated code aspects of Among Us 1, so changing plans like this is going to result in a lot of work that needs to be done to the existing game. Here’s what InnerSloth had to say about all this:
“The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it.”
This will likely be a lengthy process, and it’s unclear what level of interest there will continue to be in Among Us by the time these updates roll around. It’s a great social game to be sure, but streamers have short attention spans. You don’t really “main” games like this, you go at them hard for a month or so when everyone else is doing it, then you move on to the next thing. We’re pretty much seeing exactly that happen with Fall Guys to a certain extent, which has tumbled down the Twitch viewership list to 28th place when for a while, it was the top game of the day, every day. Currently, Among Us is second only to League of Legends. How long will that last? Unclear, but I suppose a huge update would bring people back whenever that happens.
More to come on future updates, but no, you don’t need to wait around for a sequel, as Among Us 2 has been folded into the first game instead.
