Sony Reveals Pricing On PlayStation 5, Accessories

Sony on Wednesday released pricing and availability dates on the much-anticipated new PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which will run $499.99 and $399.99, respectively, when they hit stores in the United States on November 12th.

Sony said pre-orders on the next-generation consoles will begin on Sept. 17th at select retailers. The PlayStation 5, like the competing Xbox Series X, are designed to support 4K gaming with HDR and eventually even some 8K titles.

The console will also support new Variable Refresh Rates, auto low latency mode (ALLM) and other advanced gaming features when connected to supporting displays.

At those prices, the big disc-enabled version of the Sony PS5 will be the same price as the recently announced pricing on Microsoft’s new Xbox Series X console, but the smaller Digital Edition will ring in at $100 more than the All Digital Xbox Series S. The new Xbox consoles will go on sale November 10th.

Sony, in part, won the market share battle for the last generation console war (between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One S) by launching at a lower $399 price. It will be interesting to see how the two consoles square up going head-to-head this time.

The PlayStation 5 will maintain backward compatibility with most PS4 game titles, but that compatibility does not go back to earlier versions of the platform. Xbox Series X was designed to support backward maximum compatibility with legacy games from most previous Xbox generations, maintaining past online registrations on “compatible” games. The Xbox Series X will also be compatible with Xbox One era accessories.
