Ring the changes: the best mid-price smartphones

It used to be the case that you had to spend at least £700 to get a really good phone. But in 2020, that’s no longer true. With fantastic smartphones costing as little as half as much as an iPhone 11, here’s a quick guide to the best mid-priced phones.

Many of these smartphones will also be available on mobile phone contracts with no, or little, upfront cost. Just be sure to compare the total monthly fees over the 18- or 24-month contract against the cost of buying the phone outright, and using a cheaper sim-only or pay-as-you-go plan, to make sure you are getting a good deal.

Apple ‘iPhone 12’ event rumored for Oct. 13 as Eddy Cue promotes Services to UK carrier staff

Apple may be preparing to hold its next special event for the “iPhone 12” on October 13, meanwhile Eddy Cue has appeared in an internal presentation for a UK carrier about the next iPhone, and its rumored 5G capabilities.

Apple is anticipated to be holding a second special event in the not too distant future, but it is unclear when it will take place. According to a tipster contacting AppleInsider, Apple will be holding the event on Tuesday, October 13, with preorders starting the following Friday, October 16.

The tip was sent by someone self-identified as working for a carrier in the Netherlands. While there is no concrete evidence corroborating the event date itself, the message’s IP address is one within a range controlled by a carrier’s corporate network.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Europe, another carrier is gearing up for Apple’s product launch, and is similarly expecting 5G

PayPal and Square Could Gain as EU Mulls iPhone Payments Rules

PayPal  (PYPL) – Get Report and Square  (SQ) – Get Report could be among the winners as the EU’s antitrust regulator mulls rules that could end Apple Pay’s monopoly on iPhone tap-to-pay services.

Following reports to the effect, the European Commission says it’s thinking about enacting rules that would give payment services a right of access to “infrastructure” such as the NFC chips placed within smartphones. These chips enable tap-to-pay services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay (formerly known as Android Pay).

The announcement arrives three months after the EC said it’s probing Apple’s  (AAPL) – Get Report App Store and Apple Pay policies.

In the case of Apple Pay, the EC said in June that it was concerned about Apple Pay being the only tap-to-pay solution allowed on iOS and iPadOS devices. The agency also said it was probing alleged restrictions on

New iPhone 5G launch “days away” says leaked internal video

A video was leaked this week featuring BT and EE CEO Marc Allera and Apple’s own Eddy Cue. Per the video, “we are just days away from Apple’s next major launch, a 5G iPhone, which will be a huge boost for 5G.” This is the sort of video that’d be shared among carrier officials and affiliates, not meant for public consumption. In other words, there’s little reason to believe we’re more than a month away from a “launch” of the first 5G iPhone.

When the term “just days away” is thrown around, it generally means anywhere between 2 and 14 days. After 14, it’s more reasonable to say “just weeks away.” Because we’re already nearing the end of September, 2020, and today is a Tuesday, we’ve got a set of clues that’ll allow us to better pin down the official Apple event at which the iPhone 12 will first appear.

AT&T Communications CEO Talks 6G, Claims iPhone 12 5G Launch Won’t Spark Mass Upgrades

iphone 12 launch waves

Many analysts are expecting that the next generation of smartphones from Apple will represent a “mass upgrade” opportunity as customers look to upgrade older phones. The general idea is that many Apple customers have been sitting on the sidelines with older devices (i.e., first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 8, etc.) waiting for the next big thing in smartphones to arrive: 5G connectivity.

However, AT&T Communications CEO Jeff McElfresh is throwing some cold water on that notion, and instead says that the launch of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro families might not make a much bigger blip than previous years. “I do believe that you will see many of the iPhone subscribers move to upgrade to the device,” said McElfresh in an interview with CNBC. “But I wouldn’t forecast that it’s going to be a massive event. I also don’t think it’s going to be a nonevent.”

The Galaxy 20 FE is Samsung’s answer to the iPhone 11

Lately, it’s seemed like Samsung has seen its major new phones as luxury goods—and has priced them accordingly. This year’s Galaxy S line starts at $1,000 with the Galaxy S20 and goes way, way up to $1,400 with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra range between $1,000 and $1,450. You could also pay $1,380 for a Galaxy Z Flip or $2,000 for a Galaxy Z Fold2.  I’m not even going to mention the $3,300 Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne limited edition (whoops, I just did!).

Now, it’s true that there are plenty of ways to get a deal on a theoretically pricey Samsung phone, especially if you’re trading in your old phone and are willing to sign a service contract. And the company does offer cheaper, less fancy models. But it’s lacked something roughly akin to Apple’s iPhone 11: A smartphone that doesn’t

iPad on Sale, iPhone 12 Leaked And More

Apple is always in the news. As the stock meanders up and down this week, still nearly 20% off the all-time highs, developments about the company keep popping up. Here are some of the most interesting ones today, along with my commentary on each.

iPad on sale

The new iPad 8 generation has just been announced, and it is already being discounted – by third-party vendors Amazon and Walmart at first, now even by Apple itself. The first two retailers offer the product for $299, with Walmart promising free delivery within the US in as few as 5 days. Apple is selling the basic model for $309, down from the announced price of $329, but delivery does not happen for another three weeks. Best Buy has not lowered its price yet.

The discounting activity is unusual, only one week after the product’s launch. One interpretation is that demand for the

Apple iPhone 12 mini could possibly be the name of the smallest iPhone 12 model, according to the latest leak doing the rounds online. The iPhone 12 series is expected to launch sometime in October and will bring four new iPhones. As per the recent leak by a tipster on Twitter, Apple is readying to launch the iPhone 12 mini along with three other iPhones.

According to a post on Twitter, the smallest 5.4-inch iPhone 12 will debut as the iPhone 12 mini. It is expected to be joined by the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. In retrospect, Apple has used the term “mini” with the iPad, iPod

  • OnePlus confirmed on Monday that it will launch the OnePlus 8T series on October 14th.
  • OnePlus teased on social media that the new flagship series would launch soon and then revealed the October 14th announcement date.
  • OnePlus might have to change its launch plans if Apple announces the iPhone 12 press event for October 13th or 14th, as some leaks indicate.

The novel coronavirus pandemic changed everything about product launches in the tech world, from product announcements to availability. Social distancing guidelines still make in-person press conferences or tech events impossible, and previous lockdowns and travel restrictions have contributed to launch delays.

Google’s Pixel 4a is one such example — a phone that was expected to launch in the second quarter of the year took a while longer to arrive. The iPhone 12 is also a

iOS 14 review: The best iPhone changes in years

iOS 14 pulls off a feat that’s difficult for a lot of smartphone software updates. For an update that introduces a lot of changes — and this is the most significant iOS update in a while — iOS 14 doesn’t feel like you’ve walked into an unlit room in your house after someone’s rearranged the furniture. Things get moved around in iOS 14, but critically, you’re the one doing all the moving.

With iOS 14, Apple introduces a revamped way to navigate around your iPhone. Instead of scrolling through page after page of apps, the new App Library fits everything into folders making it easier to jump to the apps we want. Widgets have been freed from the relative obscurity of the Today screen and can now live on your Home screen. Even video is no longer walled-off, as a picture-in-picture feature lets you watch videos while you work in
