From incorporating a business VoIP server to digital television, technology in communication is changing fast. That means it is also giving communicators more options than ever to get their messages out there.

What’s more, it isn’t only broadcasting or content that is feeling the change. The software and machines behind the screens are shifting too. Bringing us things like a team collaboration tool or a chatbot, making life easier, and improving communications for everyone involved.

Tech has pulled us into a new world. What started as cave paintings of hands and animals has turned into GIFs of celebrities and cats. Okay, perhaps in some ways things haven’t changed too much.

As delivered by ICRC President Peter Maurer

Colleagues, thanks a lot for the opportunity to address you today.

As Katie said, I have just returned from the Sahel region, a place hit hard by the waves of armed conflict, environmental degradation, and climate shock.

There, I witnessed a deep humanitarian crisis.

All aspects of lives are impacted: health, water, economic insecurity.

Over many years, the ICRC has witnessed these trends all over the world, in many conflict regions.

One million foreign visitors entered the country to mark 400 years of the first enslaved Africans arriving in the United States.

The event reaffirmed Ghana’s prominence in heritage tourism and the importance of tourism to its economy.
The sector is one of the main socio-economic drivers of Ghana’s foreign income and job creation. It also stimulates the growth of other industries. Tourism contributed 6.2% of Ghana’s GDP in 2017 and is the fourth highest income earner for Ghana after gold, cocoa and oil. In 2017, 1.3 million international tourists visited the country and before the COVID-19 pandemic the sector had high hopes for tourism growth.

The importance of heritage in Ghana’s tourism offerings means that museums are
